Nanoseparations was established in the year 2003 as a spin-off of an immunology research group involved in the analysis of extremely complex MHC elution samples.

The demanding task to search for minute amounts of HLA epitopes lead to the development of a nanoflow LCMS system. We recognised that the sensitivity of such systems can be greatly enhanced by reducing the column diameter and so the column flow. However, nanolitre flow rates require the elimination of both pre and post column dead volumes to the largest possible extent. Since that time, we have developed methods to pack capillary columns down to 25 µm interior diameter as well as extended length columns of, on request, up to 2 m, depending on the resin particle size and pressure limits of the (nanoflow) pump. We pack with C18 and C8 resins with particle sizes ranging from 1.3 to 5 µm. On request we can pack strong and weak cation and anion columns and trapping columns for enrichment of phosphopetides in biological samples. Nanoflow columns are preferentially employed in a column switching setup -also called vented column system- in conjunction with a well dimensioned trap column.
