Seals from WICOM

Seals are either made of pure or modified PTFE or, for use in aqueous media, of polyethylene.
The function of a seal in the HPLC pump is to provide a seal between the piston and the pump head: the piston slides back and forth through the inner sealing lip. The movement builds up pressure, with the inner sealing lip pressing against the piston and the outer sealing lip pressing against the inner wall of the pump head.
If the seal closes due to abrasion, the pressure effect decreases and the pump starts to leak. As leakage increases, so does the pressure fluctuation or pulsation of the pump.

Replacement

Pressure fluctuation as well as pulsation are particularly important in the HPLC area and should only have a small tolerance range. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that the pressure effect is always high and the seal is always tight. At the latest, when these requirements can no longer be met, the seal should be replaced. At this opportunity, it is best to also check the piston for signs of wear, as it may be that this has been affected by the decreasing function of the seal and must also be replaced.
Of course, it is better not to let any leakage occur in the first place, to check all parts regularly and replace them preventively if necessary.
